Being a mom and working at a baby store has its benefits. I am always trying out the latest and greatest in baby products. For the first year of my daughter’s life I was overwhelmed with products to make my life a little easier. How was I supposed to know if I really needed a pacifier that was a thermometer and a medicine dispenser? Yes I grew up in the baby industry but I had no experience of being an actual care giver to a newborn baby. I think a lot of moms are overwhelmed at the product selection for babies these days so I have decided to make a list of my top ten must haves for the first year in hopes that this will help. I have listed these in no particular order.
1. Ergo Baby Carrier
The Ergo Baby Carrier has so many options. You can use it with a newborn baby if you purchase an infant insert. Without the infant insert you can use it from 4 months up to 35 pounds! My two year old still gets in it! You can wear your child on the front, back, or hip. It is fully adjustable so mommies and daddies can use just the one carrier. This is by far the most comfortable baby carrier I have tried on. We first started carrying these in our store because we were getting so many requests for it. Once we had them in our store they were flying off the shelves and we had so many customers come in and give great feedback on the carrier. That is when I decided to try my daughter in it and I was amazed at the comfort of it. If you are looking to be hands free this is the way to go! You can check out the Ergo Baby Carrier and all of the accessories on our site be clicking on the image below.
2. The Clip & Go Mobile
This portable mobile attaches to the infant seat or to your stroller canopy. I used this for my infant seat and my daughter loved it. It runs on batteries so there is no winding up. Just a simple switch and it starts to turn and play classical music. If music is not appropriate at the time you can move the switch to silence. This mobile has two sides to it. It offers a black and white side for newborn babies and a more colorful plush animal side for when your child is older. This was great when I was at the grocery store or out at a restaurant. It is so hard to entertain a newborn baby especially when you are busy doing other everyday things. This really helps! To see the Clip & Go Mobile on our site click on the picture below.

3. Symphony In Motion Farmyard Mobile
The decorative mobiles are cute but I found this mobile to be very entertaining for my daughter. It plays classical music and it runs on batteries so it will play for longer and you do not have to wind anything up. It has bright colored animals and black and white under the little canopies. If my daughter was fussy I would lay her under this mobile and she would just start starring at it. I also had a friend who had a little girl about 5 weeks before Skyla (my daughter) was born. She had this mobile as well and loved it like I did. To see the Symphony in Motion Mobile on our site just click on the picture below.
4. Trimfit Baby Booties
This might sound like something simple but once you realize that socks do not stay on very well you will know that this is a must. These are some of the only socks I could keep on my daughter. They are also very warm.

5. The Ultimate Crib Sheet
This will make your life so much easier. When I would change my daughters sheets I would have to untie the bumper, take the fitted sheet and mattress pad off, replace them with clean linens (you will have to lift your mattress), and then re-tie the bumper…not fun. The ultimate crib sheet is awesome. It will lay over your fitted sheet and it secures with snaps around the crib. It is waterproof so if there is any kind of leak (especially in the middle of the night) you can just unsnap and you still have your clean fitted sheet underneath. This product makes changing the sheets a breeze!

6. The Bumbo Baby Sitter
The Bumbo seat is suitable at 3 months (when your baby has head control). It was great to give my daughter a new position other than lying on her back all day long. I would sit her in the Bumbo and read her a book or just talk to her and she loved it. I also used it when she started eating baby food. It was portable and easy to clean! Check out all of the color options on our site by clicking on the picture below.

7. Dr. Brown’s Microwave Steam Sterilizer
This steam sterilizer helped me out with all kinds of things. I used this to sterilize the bottles, pacifier, and breast pump parts (not breast pump tubing…it will melt). It was so easy to use. You just add water and put in the microwave for a few minutes.

If you are wanting to just sterilize your breast pump parts you can also use the Medela Quick Clean Micro Steam Bags.

8. The Miracle Blanket
This is a big one! When I was in the hospital the nurse showed me how to swaddle three times! I still could not get it tight enough and Skyla would always kick out of it and start crying again. I called the nurse in the room when it was time to swaddle (every few hours) because I gave up. When I got home it was time to face reality…but not really. I went to the closet and took out my miracle blanket. I had my daughter nicely swaddled in seconds! She slept so much better being swaddled. She was more comfortable, she did not startle herself through the night, I did not have to worry about her kicking off a blanket or a blanket being in her face, and it kept her from scratching herself with her paper thin nails! It was great! This is another product that I heard great things about from our customers so I figured I would try it out. I am so glad I did! The Miracle Blanket definitely had to make my top ten list! We do not sell the Miracle Blanket on our online store but we do have it in our store fronts. 9. BabySteps Complete Natural Feeding System
Some people think that making your own baby food takes too much time but this feeding system makes it so easy. This set includes everything you will need to make your own baby food. It comes with a book that will give you guidelines and recipes for different stages in your baby’s life. You will also have a manual food mill (great for taking out to restaurants) and an electric food mill. Once the baby food is pureed you have two freezer trays (with tops) so you can store what you have made. When you are ready to serve the food you can use the feeding dish. The feeding dish has the same cut outs as the freezer trays making it easy to serve.
Tip 1 : Once the baby food is completely frozen in the trays you can transfer them into freezer bags so you have the trays free to make other meals. It also helps keep the food organized.
Tip 2: When the grocery store would have bananas on sale that were almost over ripe I would buy them and puree and freeze them that same day. It saves a little money and preserves the bananas until they are ready for eating.

10. The Ultimate Receiving Blanket
This blanket is great! It is a lightweight receiving blanket that is actually big enough to cover your baby. I have found that most receiving blankets are extremely small. I used this blanket for many things. During the summer I would use it when we would visit public places that could be cool such as restaurants or the grocery stores. My daughter is two years old now and we still use it because it is still large enough to cover her. It makes for a great swaddle blanket too!
